Big Win In First Home Match Of Season

Saturday was the first home match of the season for Tulsa and was a great day for rugby. The weather finally cooperated with mild temperatures and a little sun. There was a High School curtain raiser kicking off the days activities with Broken Arrow meeting Bartlesville in Green Country League play. The youngsters put on an exciting match, they are a sign of good things to come for rugby in NE Oklahoma.
In the main event of the afternoon Tulsa faced off against the Kansas City Blues in DII league play. Coming off a big win vs. The Ramblers the week before Tulsa needed to keep things going as they need to win all there remaining games and score bonus points in order to advance to the challenge match. The game got off to a fast start for Tulsa with 8-man Trey Stewart dotting down the first score of the game off of loose play. The conversion by Roger Gassett was good making the score 7-0 Tulsa just minutes into the match. Following the kickoff and a nifty play through the backline Tulsa was in the red zone again and with the help of two KC kicks that went awry and some magical ball movement on the counter attack flanker Zach Bible was able to touchdown for Tulsa's second try of the day. The conversion from Gassett was blown wide from the day's strong wind leaving the score 12-0 Tulsa in the 10th minute of play.
The Blues were able to counter the momentum that was building on Tulsa's side by slowing the game down and playing smart rugby. A missed penalty kick by the Blues was followed minutes later by KC's first try of the day. KC won a 5 meter lineout that they were able to then maul in for their first try of the day. The conversion was also good, 10-7 Tulsa. KC was able to keep the ball in Tulsa's side of the field during this stage of the game and were rewarded with 3 points from a penalty kick, leaving the halftime score at 12-10.
Tulsa started the second half much as they started the first, on fire. The opening kickoff of the second half was returned with a thunderous boot from Roger Gassett deep into Blues territory. THe Blues lineout was stolen by Tulsa and spun out to the backs, fullback Josh Louie Vuovolo weaved his way through several defenders to touch down with less than a minute gone by in the second half. Gassett's conversion was good. 17-10 Tulsa. Again KC's kickoff was returned into their half by a deep boot from Gassett. Prop Eddieson Taeoalii, who had smashing runs all day, delivered more of the same off another lineout and off loaded to Luke Turner for another try in the opening minutes of the second half. Conversion was good, putting the score at 24-10. The rest of the match belonged to Tulsa as three more tries were scored by Trent Taber, Lemeki Batisaresare, and Doug Hilyer. Final Score 45-10 Tulsa!
